More than 900 depictions of about 80 different kinds of birds
Between 1241 and 1248, after decades of ornithological observation, Emperor Frederick II, the last member of the Staufer dynasty, wrote a textbook on hawking that became famous under the title “De arte vanandi cum avibus”. The scientific accuracy and the wealth of information provided in the text is enhanced by the magnificent illustrations that enliven almost every page of the manuscript.

Its more than 900 depictions of about 80 different kinds of birds and its detailed pictures on falconry are incredibly accurate and life-like, thus lending the manuscript not only additional charm but also securing for it a unique place in the ranks of medieval books and the history of art.
